Preview – LEGO Toy Story 7592 Construct-a-Buzz

This is a quick preview of the new 2010 LEGO set from Toy Story, 7592 Construct-a-Buzz. It comes with 205 pieces (and few are extra) and is a large-scale version of Buzz Lightyear, along with an Alien minifig (with shortened/half-height legs).

In the words of my wife, it’s “Rockin”. It’s a very neat set. It’s just under 8 inches (21cm) tall and has some really unique parts. There were surprisingly few stickers – quite a few of the parts you see with designs on them are printed. Just about everything pivots various ways, although the elbows are locked. The visor/helmet is a really neat piece that I can imagine will be used in MOCs for interesting spaceship designs (or domes for some kind of micro/mini-scale landscapes). It’s got a couple of large purple plates for wings, and I believe you can’t get them in this color in any other set.

I’ll get the full review published later today, complete with photos of the construction, since it’s pretty unique.

Review: LEGO Atlantis 8072 Sea Jet

This is going to be very similar to the LEGO Atlantis 8073 Manta Warrior Review I posted last night, given the price point of under $4.00 and with it being an impulse set and all.

There is one big difference between the two – the 8073 is focused on Manta Warrior and his rubbery head with a small amount of scenery. This set on the other hand is focused equally on the human diver and the “Sea Jet” which was an easy to build underwater scooter of sorts. Given the ease and standard parts used in building the Sea Jet, it would be quite easy and cheap to outfit all of your human divers using BrickLink. The “wings” move up and down, as do the handlebars and grip/claw at the front.

Again, it’s what you see is what you get – there is nothing fancy about the jet or the human diver. I wouldn’t have minded seeing this combined with the Manta Warrior for a $6 set, or perhaps as part of a “Battle Pack” similar to what you see with the Star Wars lines where you get 4-5 human divers and some sea jets for around $10 – $12.

LEGO Creator 5867 Super Speedster – Minifig Scale?

After seeing the comparison between the Creator 5867 Super Speedster and 8156 Ferrari, somebody worked out the actual size and asked me if the 5867 is minifig-scale. Luckily I caught the email right before I was about to tear down the speedster and work on the armored car build of it.

The answer is yes, sort of.

Simple answer: If you are willing to remove a tile from the seats, and remove the legs from the minifigs, you can fit them in there (click for larger image):

Complex (and proper) answer: If you were to change the seats, as well as change how the roof plate is supported, they would fit comfortably (minus any mini figures with large heads). The speedster is scaled to fit them if you make those changes. Changing it into a convertible might just be the easiest way to deal with the roof, and would allow you to work the seat tile back into the mix, raising the minifig so he can see over the steering wheel, but then you start getting into working on the dashboard…I would build it, look at what doesn’t work, then back up and tear it down to where you can work with them.

Comparison of Creator 5867 Super Speedster with 8156 Ferrari FXX

I’m not going to get the review of the new 2010 LEGO Creator 5867 Super Speedster, which is a 3-in-1 (also makes for an armored car and a go-cart) posted tonight, but I figured I would post some photos showing a comparison to the 8156 Ferrari FXX 1:17.

I did so since it seemed like a natural comparison – both are sports cars and both have nearly an identical color scheme. The Super Speedster is a new model for 2010 and comes with 278 pieces sells for $19.99 (available now at the LEGO Online Shop and Amazon.com), while the Ferrari had over 600 pieces and retailed for around $60.

Obviously it’s quite a bit smaller than the Ferrari, but there’s quite a few influences present from the Ferrari. My general impression so far (I have yet to build the go-cart and armored car) is that it’s a great value for $19.99 and comes with a lot of useful plates and smaller pieces (if you prefer red/black).

Review: LEGO Power Miners 8189 Magma Mech (2010 Set)

I walked into my local TRU Thanksgiving Eve. My mission: to find an interesting LEGO set that I hadn’t thought of grabbing before. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do a Power Miners set again, or get something from the Atlantis line. As I strolled up and down the LEGO aisle, I grabbed the Power Miners Thunder Driller, but that wasn’t enough. I felt I had to buy another LEGO set to quench me of my pending holiday boredom when I decided to snatch one the one particular PM set that was smack-dab right in front of me. The set? The new 2010 Magma Mech with Firax, an updated version of Firox from the Power Miners 8960 Thunder Driller (they switched the “o” with the “a”.) Sure, I really wanted to get the Crystal Sweeper, but that was not in the budget unless I wanted to put the mech and the Thunder Driller back on the shelf. It also dawned on me that you readers would want to read a review and see a pic or two of the newer set.
