A couple of people have emailed us about upcoming Toy Story 3 LEGO sets that are now showing up for pre-order at Amazon.com (USA) (and Jason came across them earlier today while looking for something else). All three sets are available May 1, 2010. They don’t appear to be showing up in other countries just yet.
The big news to me, from the information posted with the three sets, is that the listing for the 7597 Western Train Chase say it is “Fully compatible with existing LEGO train tracks power functions. This isn’t like the LEGO 7199 Temple of Doom from Indiana Jones that featured a unique rail system for the mine carts that was not compatible with existing LEGO train tracks/power functions. It’s pricey, weighing in at $79.99 for less than 600 pieces, but if it’s compatible with the existing train systems, that adds quite a bit to the value.

* LEGO 7597 Western Train Chase – $79.99
* Locomotive and train cars rolls, train cars have opening doors, roofs, and traps on the roof.
* Includes Train, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie, Bullseye, Rex and Hamm as “Evil Doctor Porkchops” minifigs/minifigures
* Fully compatible with LEGO train tracks and LEGO power functions
* 584 pieces

* LEGO 7596 Trash Compactor Escape – $49.99
* Trash compactor set
* Has Lotso, Hamm, Woody and 2 alien minifigures/minifigs
* Movable crane, functioning claw and dumpster, and moving conveyor belt
* 370 pieces

* LEGO 7789 Lotso’s Dump Truck – $19.99
* Dump truck set with driver
* Includes Lotso, Chunk and Stretch minifigures (minifigs)
* Trailer bed can be raised and lowered
* 129 pieces
The Playstation UK Blog posted an interview with Jonathan Smith of Traveller’s Tales, the company behind the upcoming LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 video game. Smith is the Head of Production for Traveller’s Tales, and is calling the LEGO Harry Potter game “a new kind of LEGO gameplay” with characters learning/advancing over a long period of time (4 years in-game).

Hogwarts is going to be fully modeled in the virual LEGO universe, and in a different way from other LEGO or Harry Potter games (including a new way of building):
The new layer of physics makes the world more realistic and enable us to build with Lego using magic in a way you’ve never been able to do before. And taking advantage of this wonderful setting of Hogwarts and the magical characters within it, we can use magic to create a new kind of lego gameplay as well
So what’s radically and completely new in Lego Harry Potter from what we’ve done before is the effect that having Hogwarts as a massive explorable environment has on the game progression and the game structure. When you first start as a new student in Hogwarts, finding your way to your first lesson you’ll be pretty well directed by the teaches and the design of the environment to find your way, but as you play and progress further through the story, with each new spell you’ll gain access to new areas and trigger new story events that move on through the plot. So you’ll find more and more of Hogwarts accessible to you as a player, switching between different characters, until it becomes a really huge, immersive, explorable, open environment — to which you’ll return between story events to discover more secrets and learn more things.

We now have photos of the sets that were shown at Toy Fair 2010 in New York from Figures.com. I had expected they would have shown up officially at the London Toy Fair. Huw at Brickset who saw some of those sets in London had predicted that they would be well received and I believe they will be as well, if the pictures are a good indication.

The sets shown:

The group pool at flickr for Brickvention 2010 is now active and being updated.

Brickvention is a LEGO-oriented convention and exhibition held every year in Australia. This year’s event took place January 23rd and January 24th in Melbourne. There were hundreds of models/sets/MOCs from all around Australia, along with demonstrations and games.

Update: February 14, 2010: Photos of the 2010 LEGO Harry Potter sets are available.
Huw over at Brickset attended the London Toy Fair today to look at LEGO’s upcoming offerings. No photography was allowed unfortunately. Huw made plenty of observations on the displayed sets.
A few notes on Huw’s observations:
* The Harry Potter launches towards the end of this year will be well-received, and The Burrows sounds like it’s what a lot of us were hoping for. I’m surprised at the number of new minifigs – two dozen or so.
* City Trains sounds very promising
* The Prince of Persia theme sounds awesome as well
* Hero Factory will probably be a suitable replacement for Bionicle
* Technic’s launches in August sound solid
* Also the collectible minifigs sound as good as they look. I’m not too happy that some will be rarer than others.
What I’m most excited about is this:
The three summer Atlantis sets look interesting: there’s another creature, a lobster I think, an underwater base and the ‘portal of Atlantis’. The pictures shown elsewhere of these are only a small part of them.

A quick note: I was mistaken yesterday, LEGO did do some promotion of the movie on the Atlantis.LEGO.com site, but I still believe more should have been done on LEGO.com as well as the Cartoon Network website. That’s just me.
If you’ve been following the Atlantis Theme, nothing in the movie should be a surprise. I’m going to post a short review, then some notes from the movie, and then a full synopsis of the movie (all in this post). If you don’t want to be spoiled, stop reading after the short review in the paragraph after this.
My overall impression is that it was very well done. The animation was good, the voice talent was good. As an AFOL, I wasn’t cringing at anything (and they even referrenced AFOLs at the end of the movie), it was enjoyable, and I could see kids really liking it. It showcased every single one of the existing LEGO Atlantis sets except for the 8079 Shadow Snapper. It also showed or hinted at a few large sets that we know about, but that aren’t yet available for purchase (later this year). It also showed something that… I don’t want to spoil the movie, so I’ll post it at the bottom, but let’s just say that it could either turn into a huge theme on its own, or be a sub-theme of Atlantis. It used almost all of the content from the Atlantis.LEGO.com website with the exception of the backstory around Dr. Artimus Rhodes and his great-granddaughter Professor Samantha Artesia Rhodes. This was probably due to the time constraints of a half-hour movie. It will be interesting to see if the LEGO Brickmaster Atlantis book fills in any gaps. It used all of the minifigs we’ve seen in the Atlantis sets, and everything but the Neptune Carrier was scaled appropriately.
STOP READING HERE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO HAVE THE MOVIE SPOILED!!
