LEGO in Space – LEGO Space Shuttles on the Real Space Shuttle

Last November, I posted an article about NASA and the LEGO Group literally sending LEGO Space Shuttles into orbit and now it’s finally happened.

NASA has posted an article about new experiments headed towards the International Space Station on today’s Shuttle flight and LEGO is a part of that:

A NASA educational payload will deliver several toy Lego kits that can be assembled to form satellites, space shuttles and a scale model of the space station itself to demonstrate scientific concepts, and a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency experiment called Try Zero-G that will help future astronauts show children the difference between microgravity and Earth gravity.

There is even an official NASA payload page for the LEGO sets:

Space Applications
The Lego Brick is widely well-known throughout the world. NASA partnering with this company makes the US space program highly visible to a new audience. The Lego Group has developed a whole new commercial line titled ?Lego Space City? that premiers in the US in early 2011. This new product features vehicles and models directly from NASA real-life vehicles. To accompany this, the Lego Group is launching a new website Lego Space that NASA will be able to link to. The release of new products, the website, and along with the supporting of future education, gives the space program a new boost and offers many possibilities for young students.

Earth Applications
The Lego Group and Lego Education use the Lego Brick and Lego kits to teach fundamental Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics concepts to a variety of students worldwide. These educational activities are geared for students ages 4-18 and offer a unique setting for students to investigate topics such as forces and motion, simple machines, renewable energy, and robotics. The release of new products, the website, and along with the supporting of future education, gives the space program a new boost and offers many possibilities for young students.

Operational Requirements
There are 9 Lego Bricks kits flying on board ULF6. Each kit contains several models. There are 28 models total (varying in complexity). As per the 3-year Space Act Agreement, NASA provides the means and certification for these kits to fly aboard the ISS.

Operational Protocols
All Lego models must be assembled in the Maintenance Work Area (MWA) with containment system, with the exception of LC00-A (Duplo Bricks and Plate) and LC03-D (Lego Bricks ISS 2 Kit Living Interior). Crewmembers must build each model according to the building guides, but may improvise on the talking points. Video is downlinked at a later time to the ground crew, who in turn provides the raw video footage to the Lego Group. Lego Bricks pieces are then disassembled per crew preference and stowed back in the kit.

Once we start seeing photos and videos, we’ll be sure to post them.

Review: LEGO 7049 Alien Conquest – Alien Striker

The conquest is here! No, not the conquest on the planet of the apes, but the LEGO Alien Conquest series has finally overrun your local LEGO shop and other toy stores (and Target). The first set I’ve picked up at my local LEGO store is set #7049 Alien Striker. It’s also available at the online LEGO Store.

LEGO 7049 - Alien Conquest - Alien Striker Review

I had a bunch of LEGO VIP points (become a VIP member if you haven’t), and spent some of them on this nice $4.99 set. Like all sets in this price range, the Alien Striker leaves a lot to be desired with it’s 42 piece count, but I believe this is more than made up for with the inclusion of a new alien soldier figure and blue ADU (Alien Defense Unit) trooper.

By the Numbers:
Set: LEGO 7049 Alien Striker from Alien Conquest Series
Year of Release: 2011
Type: Small set/Impulse
# of Pieces: 42
# of Minifigs and what kind: 2, including alien
Stickers? No
Price: MSRP $4.99 USD
Ages: 6-14
Time to Complete: Less than 10 minutes

Available for Purchase: (Prices maybe higher than MSRP)
* Amazon.com

If you are a major fan of minifigs like I am, then you will most likely want this set. At about five dollars, this set is a good buy for the figures alone. Compared to the $2.99 bagged minifigs that LEGO has been cranking out of the past year, an alien and an ADU trooper is worth buying, more so than a series 4 minifig that can be a double of something you already have (since you never know what’s in the bag).

This set is a great way to build your army for the alien conquest of LEGO Earth.

LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – Even Better Sale, Pirates of the Caribbean Game, Site News

I mentioned earlier this week that the LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 video game is on sale on various platforms. It’s dropped in price even more. I’ve picked up a copy and will be reviewing it in the near future.

LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4:
* Nintendo Wii: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – $15.96
* Nintendo DS: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – $14.91
* Sony Playstation 3: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – $20.35
* Sony Playstation PSP: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – $17.99
* Microsoft XBox 360: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – $15.70
* Microsoft Windows: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – $19.96

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean started shipping from Amazon this week, although it’s not available on all platforms just yet. Thankfully the Mac OS X and Windows versions come together and Mac users aren’t getting an expensive Windows port from a third party.

* Nintendo Wii: LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean
* Nintendo DS: LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean
* Nintendo 3DS: LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean
* Sony Playstation 3: LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean
* Sony Playstation PSP: LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean
* Microsoft XBox 360: LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean
* Mac OS X / Microsoft Windows: LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean

Site News
We’ll be soon introducing a new look to the site, as well as a lot of new reviews of both current and older LEGO sites. Most of this will start happening fairly quickly.

Alien Conquest is Here and in Stores!

If you haven’t been to your local LEGO store lately, the Alien Conquest sets are available, at least in Texas. Jason has picked up one of the smaller sets, the 7049 Alien Striker (Brickset) and I’m looking at a few mid-range.

Alien Conquest themed MOCs have started appearing, such as this one by PandoraNuker (flickr). I love the use of some of the Hazmat minifigures from the last minifig series.

I’m changing my mind about the Alien Conquest series, the more I see it in the stores.

LEGO Clearance Sets at Target – 5974 Galactic Enforcer

Earlier this week I picked up a LEGO 5974 Galactic Enforcer from the Space Police line at my local Target for $50.48 plus tax. That’s 825 pieces, including some good minifigs and a lot of really cool parts that are hard to find elsewhere.

Chances are the set I picked up this week from the Space Police line is being cleared out to make room for the new Alien Conquest sets, which are filling in the gap that Space Police will leave. Even though the sign prominently says 30% off, it is 30% or more, and the set I picked up was obviously more – originally the Galactic Enforcer was around $100. I had been wanting this set for a while, since it came out, but I was always tied up with other sets.

Clearances are going to vary by store, as some stores may have more in stock of certain sets than others, but there will be a lot of shelf-clearing going on, as room has been made for Pirates of the Caribbean, and the upcoming Alien Conquest and Cars sets in addition to other lines that are rolling out new offerings (or are themselves new). The location of the clearance area is also going to vary – in my case, it was in the toy area, on the end of an aisle, but some stores have an aisle off in the back dedicated to it.

LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – Decent Prices

For whatever reason, either because we are starting to get into the major advertising period in the run up to part 2 of the seventh Harry Potter movie (technically I guess it’s the eight movie), or because the LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean video game is launching next week, Amazon has been running a major sale on all of the LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 video games.

The Nintendo DS version appears to have additional items, including possibly a Harry Potter minifigure and wand/stylus, but I am not sure.

* Nintendo Wii: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – $20.04
* Nintendo DS: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – $16.67
* Sony Playstation 3: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – $25.55
* Sony Playstation PSP: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – $18.18
* Microsoft XBox 360: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – $19.71
* Microsoft Windows: LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 – $19.96

I prefer the Wii version, given the Wiimotes used like wands. As usual, the Mac version is twice as much as it’s a port done by a smaller company.

Obviously, these are all subject to change!
