Atlantis Showing up in Stores?

A LEGO fan over at the EuroBricks forums is claiming to have bought some of the new Atlantis sets at a Dallas, Texas area Toys R Us. CaptainBrickBear is listing these as the prices:

Monster Crab Clash – set # 8056-1 – $6.49
Guardian of the Deep – set # 8058-1 – $14.99
Typhoon Turbo Sub – set # 8060-1 – $24.99

He said they were featured on the shelves and didn’t look to be an accident. Amazon is still showing January 1, 2010 as the launch date for Atlantis.

Target and Toys R US have had some pretty aggressive sales as of late on LEGO products, and the back of the BrickMaster magazine does say November 24, 2009. Some people have speculated that either stores are clearing inventory to make way for Atlantis, if the November 24 date is correct, and others are pointing out that the “Black Friday” sales in the US are coming up over the Thanksgiving holiday.

The official Atlantis.LEGO.com website went live a few days ago, and like Amazon.com, is still saying January of 2010.

I’ll be swinging by my local Toys R Us tomorrow just out of curiosity…

Top Gear’s Stig to Get LEGO Minifig?

stig The Age is claiming that the test driver on BBC’s Top Gear automotive TV show is getting his own LEGO minifigure. The Stig is the normally anonymous racing driver on Top Gear, dressed in all white, complete with a white helmet and blueish visor that is always kept down.

It wouldn’t be surprising for a couple of reasons. One reason, the presenters are major LEGO fans – you can read about James May’s attempt at building a house completely out of LEGO here (TopGear.com). Eventually the over three million bricks that made up the house were taken to Legoland at Windsor to be used in an annual building contest. There were even some custom minifigs made of Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond. The Stig is also very recognizable – there are a few hundred million viewers of the show.

Finally, and most importantly, LEGO has been using the likenesses of highly visible Formula 1 Ferrari drivers for a while now, including:
* Michael Shumacher (Set # 8389-1 in 2004, 8672-1 in 2006)
* Rubens Barrichello (Set # 8389-1 in 2004, 8672-1 in 2006)
* Fillippe Massa (set # 8144-1 in 2007, 8672-1 in 2006, 8168-1 in 2009)
* Kimi Raikkonen (set # 8168-1 in 2009)

Atlantis, Ben 10 LEGO Teaser Websites Are Live

Sometime last night or this morning, two teaser websites for two new LEGO lines have went live on LEGO.com.

They are for LEGO’s in-house Atlantis line as well as the Cartoon Network’s Ben 10 Alien Force lines. The Atlantis site mentions a January 4, 2010 launch date which matches with Amazon.com, etc., although there has been some discussion concerning an ad in the latest BrickMaster magazine which shows a November 24, 2009 launch date.

Right now the Atlantis site is a cool little flash animation/movie with some background, including a neat little journal you can read that is set in the early 1900s. The journal is worth a read – it’s fairly long for something that’s just a teaser. There are various items on the sea bed including what appears to be an old submarine that sunk long ago. There are some free downloads as well.

The Ben 10 line has biographies and video, almost all of which are locked for now with a message saying come back soon. The video for Swampfire mainly shows him being assembled and with the voice from the Cartoon Network series.

There is one interesting little tidbit in the Swampfire video – at one point you can see what might be the new airplane (LEGO # 3181-1) that is coming out in 2010:
