LEGO Movie – Adventures of Clutch Powers Shipping

By Chad, February 23, 2010

lego-movie-clutch-powers LEGO’s first movie on DVD, the Adventures of Clutch Powers, should be available today (February 23, 2010), at least in the US.

Amazon.com is currently listing it for $14.99 (normally $19.98) with a release date of today. This is for the widescreen version in English, with English, French, and Spanish subtitles. It’s 82 minutes long. Best Buy is also showing it with a release date of today but there’s no way to check if it’s available in the physical Best Buy stores yet – it’s only listed for pre-order on their website.

Before anybody says “what about the Bionicle movies?” LEGO is apparently not counting those, and rightfully so. It’s also not counting LEGO Atlantis: The Movie since that has not made an appearance on DVD (unfortunately).

Obviously it’s going to be used to help sell LEGO products and sets, however a lot of effort has been put into it, and it’s looking more and more like it will be a way to introduce newcomers and possibly even AFOLs to either existing sets or upcoming sets, such as Kingdoms (the replacement for Castle), Power Miners, Space Police, etc. I think it’s going to be as cool as the Atlantis movie.

Don’t expect any of the licensed themes like Harry Potter or Star Wars to make an appearance – from the trailer and from people I’ve talked to, this is all in-house themes/lines from LEGO.

This is LEGO and Universal Home Entertainment’s summary of the action:

For the first time ever, see the creative world of LEGO® come to life in the all-new feature-length DVD movie. Meet Clutch Powers, the best builder and explorer in the LEGO®universe as he heads off on his most dangerous mission yet. Join Clutch and his team of LEGO®experts as their adventure leads them from LEGO® City to the Space Police prison planet to the medieval world of Ashlar where they must help the rightful heir to the King’s throne find the courage to regain the kingdom from the evil wizard Mallock the Malign. Their brick-building skills will be put to the ultimate test as they face off against Mallock’s skeleton army. Get ready for an action-packed adventure like nothing you have ever seen before, The Adventures of Clutch Powers!

LEGO Club TV – 2 New Videos (LEGO Universe, Space Police)

By Chad, January 9, 2010

LEGO Club TV has added a couple of new YouTube videos over the past few days.

One is the official trailer to LEGO Universe, which is an upcoming massively multiplayer online game (MMOG):

The other is a behind-the-scenes look at how the stop-motion animated Space Police videos for SpacePolice.LEGO.com are made:

Target (US) has 3 $30 LEGO sets for $20 apiece

By Chad, December 6, 2009

This week some Target retail stores in the US have three sets that normally sell for $29.99 on sale for $19.

The sets are:
5972 Space Police Container Heist (282 pieces)
8036 Star Wars Clone Wars Separatists Shuttle (259 pieces)
8960 Power Miners Thunder Driller (235 pieces)

The ads also mention that other selected LEGO Star Wars, Power Miners, and Space Police sets are on sale, however there is no mention of exactly which ones are on sale, at least in the flyer and on the Target.com website. It’s probably either a regional or store-by-store basis depending on what’s in stock.

On a related note, I noticed that Sears is carrying more LEGO sets. Keep in mind that it maybe a seasonal thing because of the holidays, but I saw several Star Wars sets, some Pirates sets, plus Power Miners, Bionicle, Space Police, Castle, and City.

LEGO Featured on ABC’s Nightline

By Chad, November 16, 2009

Update: Here is a longer version of the clip – “Plastic Fantastic” at ABCNews.go.com. If you watch carefully, you can see LEGO Atlantis sets in the clip as well as some of the purple parts for the new Space Police 5982 Smash ‘n’ Grab being made.

ABC’s Nightline ran a story tonight called “LEGO Rebuilds Brand, Brick by Brick”, discussing how LEGO continues to do better than many other companies in the toy industry in the face of ongoing economic problems. An ABC crew went to Denmark to the LEGO headquarters. It discussed LEGO’s economic problems in 2003-2004 and how it bounced back and actually began to grow. They’ve got some clips of Jorgen Vik Knudsdorp, the CEO of LEGO, talking about it as well.

I knew LEGO was doing well recently, but they mentioned that LEGO sales in the US grew 38% last year even as the recession worsened and there were drops in toy sales in general.

I will warn you – there is a short advertisement that runs before the show and at least one of the ads may not be worksafe or appropriate for kids.

Review: LEGO 2010 Space Police 5982 Smash ‘n’ Grab

By Chad, November 16, 2009

Finally, our last review of the 2010 sets (for now). It’s been kind of crazy the amount of traffic we’ve drawn, and I’m glad we were lucky enough to be among the first to review the 2010 sets. Hopefully we’ve helped people make up their minds one way or the other about these sets, and if you have any questions or want us to take additional photos, please feel free to contact us.

For those of you who were big fans of of the heavily purple 4755-1 or 4695 Knight Bus (Brick link) from the Harry Potter line, your (space)ship has arrived, in the form of the Space Police 5982-1 Smash ‘n’ Grab. It’s an interesting theme – a purple and black spaceship that is shaped like an old pickup/tow truck whose purpose is apparently to steal ATM machines that hover around in space. The ATM machine is labeled “Asteroid Bank”. If you are curious, from what we can tell, the purple is consistent across the parts that have a glossy finish. The minifig Squidtron is a nice reference to Blacktron.

By the Numbers:
Set: 5982-1 Space Police Smash ‘n’ Grab
Type: Vehicle in the Space Police line
# of Pieces: 188
# of Extra pieces: 10 (see photo below)
# of Minifigs and what kind: 2, human with spacesuit, weapon, double-printed head, alien “Squidtron” with strange head.
Stickers? Yes, but kept to a minimum and most are not required.
Price: $19.99 USD at Official LEGO Shop, also at Amazon.com (price may vary)
