More on LEGO’s focus on Atlantis

By Chad, December 31, 2009

In addition to LEGO Atlantis: The Movie that’s coming on the Cartoon Network on January 15, there’s quite a bit of material out there to make the case that January is The Month for LEGO’s Atlantis line.

The 2010 LEGO Store calendars (here in the USA at least) are focusing on Atlantis, with the header featuring the new Atlantis 8058 Guardian of the Deep and the Atlantis 8060 Typhoon Turbo Sub.

The footer mentions that January’s LEGO Club (for kids) t-shirt is focused on Atlantis as well, and the build is an underwater creature from the Atlantis line.

You also get a coupon valid from January 1 – January 31, 2010, for a free Shark Man Key Chain (Item # 862774) if you spend $75 or more in the LEGO Store.

LEGO Store Notes

By Chad, December 31, 2009

I had a chance to visit a LEGO store north of Dallas (the The Stonebriar Centre/Frisco LEGO Store) and in addition to the calendar I picked up yesterday that mentioned LEGO Atlantis: The Movie coming out in a few weeks, I took a look around at the sets available as well as spoke with a few people, and made a few notes:

1) The only Indiana Jones sets and Spongebob Squarepants sets I saw were returns and went fast.
2) Quite a few King’s Battle Chariot’s (7078) were available, along with some Troll Battle Packs, but very little else (if anything) from the Castle series. Guess they are making way for LEGO Kingdoms later this year when it replaces Castle.
3) Some good deals to be had on a few Pirate sets – I think I got the last Pirates Battle Pack (for $10.98) and there were quite a few 8396 Soldier’s Arsneal for $2.48 which is a really good deal. Like Castle, it’s pretty clear they are going away for a while. What’s unclear is what’s going to replace them – Pirates of the Caribbean?
4) No matter how hard I try to pack a Pick-A-Brick cup (large), I always leave a few gaps that are glaringly obvious afterward.
5) LEGO Store employees have a thankless task – I saw two kids that were filling their free box, the one you get if you buy $75 or more before Christmas, and they were overfilling them and just having a blast, happily spilling LEGO pieces everywhere from PAB. Just grabbing handfuls of pieces and adding them to the box that was already spilling pieces. A LEGO Store employee had to literally sweep up several dozen pieces just from one girl. No parent in sight of course. I imagine that happens quite a bit.
6) As for the 10199 Winter Toy Shop, none available, which makes three stores I know of that are out.
7) Saw very few older sets – saw plenty of the new sets we and others have already covered. I’m wondering what will be available this Friday in addition to the Imperial Flagship. I’m also seeing this at non-LEGO retail stores such as Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, Target, etc. I’ve seen a lot of steeply discounted sets from Castle, Pirates, Spongebob, and Indiana Jones.

The most important news I think, besides the confirmation of the LEGO Atlantis: The Movie bit, was that the 10210 Imperial Flagship will be in stores and available on January 1st (Friday). Employees were very confident about this.

LEGO Atlantis – The Movie, on Cartoon Network, Jan 15, 2010

Update: More information on Atlantis movie

In case you haven’t had a chance to pick up one of the in-store calendars from one of the official LEGO stores, the January-February LEGO Club Newsletter, or haven’t heard about it elsewhere, on January 15, 2010, there will be a movie on Cartoon Network, LEGO Atlantis: The Movie.

This is a quick photo from the front and back of the calendar focused on the movie – you can’t see much other than some of the Atlantis Minifigs and creatures.

2010 LEGO Atlantis Movie - Jan 15, 2010

Presumably more information will show up on Atlantis.LEGO.com as we get closer. Obviously it will be animated, but whether it’s a short feature or long is anybody’s guess. I would guess that it would not be something too short, since they would probably call it something else rather than LEGO Atlantis: The Movie.

I’m wondering if it will be available in 3D since there are a few 3D promotions for Atlantis either out or coming up.

And yes, the June 15th date is a misprint.

Review: LEGO Star Wars 8092 Luke’s Landspeeder

By Jason, December 26, 2009

Here’s the review – better late than never. I never bought the original release of the LEGO Landspeeder years ago, but I can say (based on the pics of the old one) that this Landspeeder is sleeker, and doesn’t look like a huge brick with jet engines (like the old version). The build itself is solid. There’s not one issue I had with the completed model such as jiggly engine pods, or easily knocked off parts. I also find it pretty cool that all the pieces are existing LEGO parts, so if you want to hunt down all the parts to build another one, you would be able to make a landspeeder in any color you want.

Note: One of the engines is deliberately without a cowling – check the box art.

By Chad, December 24, 2009

Jason found the LEGO Star Wars 8092 Luke’s Landspeeder from the 2010 Star Wars LEGO sets in the Houston area at a Wal-Mart. The price was $24.95 although it may vary – it wasn’t easily found in the system.

It comes with 163 pieces and 6 minifigs:
- R2-D2
- C-3P0
- Sentry Droid
- Sandtrooper
- Obi-Wan Kenobi
- Luke Skywalker

Both Luke and Obi-Wan had molded hair, and all of the minifigs’ details are printed.

Review: LEGO Toy Story 7595 Army Men on Patrol (2010)

By Jason, December 22, 2009

If LEGO decides to do anymore of these army men sets, then I vote for a pack of airborne troopers like in the first Toy Story. I know they will never make a bucket of 100 LEGO minifig army men, but that would be awesome if they did. Maybe, LEGO can make a LEGO army men bucket to store these guys in. That’s just a suggestion, LEGO. Oh, and then package the bucket with some figs and maybe a green tank, or something.

Set: LEGO 7595 Toy Story Army Men on Patrol
Type: Vehicle in Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story Line
# of Pieces: 90
# of Extra pieces: None
# of Minifigs and what kind: 4 X Green Army Men
